WSOC Faces STCC in R21 Semis on Sunday
BROCKTON, Mass. --- The nationally ranked and undefeated Massasoit women's soccer team earned the No. 1 seed in the Region 21 Tournament and will face Springfield Tech on Sunday at Durfee High School in Fall River. The match is set for 11 AM.
Due to inclement weather forecasted in the Brockton area, the tournament, originally scheduled for Saturday, was pushed back a day and to Durfee High School's turf field for the semifinal contests.
Bristol and Holyoke faceoff in the second semifinal tilt at 1 PM.
If Massasoit were to advance, it would host the Bristol/Holyoke winner at Warrior Field on Monday at 2 PM.
The Warriors have put forth a historic 2021 campaign after a year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite only having 13 student-athletes on the roster, Massasoit has rolled through the regular season to the tune of a 9-0-0 record and has allowed only two goals all season, while posting seven shutouts.
In net, the reigning NJCAA Goalie of the Week, freshman Ailish Olmstead of Brockton leads the NJCAA in goals against average (0.13) and save percentage (.963). She has stopped 26 of the possible 27 shots on net this season, yielding only one goal in eight matches.
On offense, Kiana Fernandes of Taunton has led the charge, scoring a league-best 17 goals in just nine matches. She has netted a goal in eight of nine matches, posted multiple goals on seven occasions and has a pair of hattricks on the year.
Fellow freshman Vanessa Dos Anjos of Raynham ranks second on the team in goals with six and also has six assists for 18 points.
Massasoit is in search of its first Region 21 Championship since 1999 and first NJCAA National Tournament appearance since 1989.
